Who are we?

We are the Sea Scout Group of Christchurch with our HQ on the edge of Stanpit Marsh and close to Christchurch Harbour. We are run by Adult Leaders and Young Leaders and we get support from parents and from around our community

TSO is our base "Training ship Orestes" , naval bases are called ships , HMS Orestes was a naval cutter (a Sloop of war) involved in the battle for Mudeford in 1784, against the Mudeford Smugglers!

We also use the Hengistbury Head Outdoor Activity Centre for all our Water activities and our "Fleet" is stored there.

The Group is led by the Group Scout Leader and the Chair of the Executive Committee. There is a full leadership team and an active committee who all contribute to making scouting happen in Mudeford. Scouting is very popular in this area and one of our biggest current issues is that we are full in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts with a long waiting list. If you think you might be able to help, please see "Get Involved" We need You! so that we can fulfil our aspirations and offer Scouting to everyone that wants to join.

We also have an affiliated Explorer Unit, so we provide Scouting from 6 – 18 years.

Our Group is a charity in its own right (registered charity no. 302217), although we are governed by The Scout Association. The Scout Association sets policies and rules, insures all its members, and supports scouting regionally, and within Christchurch

RN Recognition

As sea Scouts it is important to us that we achieve a good programme and a good standard of training

The Scouting Community

Mudeford Sea Scout Group is part of a much bigger scouting community; district scouting, county scouting, national scouting. And last but not least worldwide scouting.

Christchurch is a very active District with lots of competitions, a Scout Band, Scout and Guide Gang show and International Camps held every three years

The whole of Christchurch District parades to the Priory for St George's Day

In 2019 it was our turn to lead the parade

We are also close to our local Church All Saints Mudeford.

We take part in services with them to celebrate

St Georges Day , Remembrance Day and Christmas

These are Community events for all our Young People and not only for CofE families. These are opportunities for us to show our commitment to our Mudeford Community.

Our Committee

The Scout Group is primarily made up of two elements; the scouting leadership team and the committee. The Group Scout Leader (GSL) supports the scouting leadership team and the Chair supports the committee. The GSL has overall responsibility for the Group. All of these people are unpaid volunteers.

The Committee is a group of volunteers, mostly parents of young people in the Group and some leaders, who look after the non-scouting activities elements such as the site, the finances, community relationships and group events.

Together they pool their skills and manage what is needed. They are supported by a Quartermaster and various parents who offer time and skills to various tasks. We also employ professionals for jobs such as fire extinguisher maintenance and electricians.

The Committee is always looking for more members or people just to offer to help in some small way without becoming a member. If you can, please contact us at :

Family Camp

Mudeford is famous for our exciting Family camps at Braggers Wood. All the families of our young People are invited to join in for the weekend. A weekend of fun, making friends, taking part in the activities on site and just maybe learning a few Scouting skills
